Senja island
A true winter adventure
4th - 10th March 2026
the Most adventurous photo tour to the magical island of Senja in northern norway
Have you been looking into joining a photo tour to Senja, but have you noticed that all the offered photo tours look more or less the same?
If you are looking for adventure and are willing to work for your photos, then this is the tour you are looking for. I will take you off the beaten path, to wilder, secluded and more difficult to reach locations on this incredibly diverse and majestic island. We will use snowshoes to walk away from the roadside locations and to hike up hills and mountains to get to those unique vantage points.
Senja is known as Norway in miniature and has it all. From sharp jagged peaks, sandy beaches, fjords, traditional fishing villages and countless mountains. Senja is also located right under the Auroral oval which makes it the perfect place to see and photograph the Northern Lights.

Small group
We will have a small group of 3 participants and me, Jurre Jan, as your photography and wilderness guide.
A small group will make sure we are more flexible and that we will not stand in each-others way when taking photos. It also allows us to use a more capable 4×4 vehicle.

Day and Night
We want to make the most of what Senja has to offer, and one of these things are the Northern Lights. Be prepared for long days, taking photos during the day and in the evening when the darkness is being illuminated by the magnificent Aurora.
What to expect
A week full of adventure, visiting unknown and known locations in a small group of 3 participants and me as your guide.
Senja isn’t a small island, in fact, it’s the 2nd biggest island of Norway. So there is a lot, and I mean a lot to explore and photograph.
The (north)west coast is by far the most famous, because of the rugged coastline and their incredible sharp mountains. But other parts of the island offer amazing and rarely photographed scenery as well. Our days will be filled with exploring and photographing as much as we can.
Don’t worry, we will also visit the well known sights, as they are well known for a good reason. But we will not only focus on these locations.
Below is a small example of some of the locations that we can visit:
Hesten mountain (view to Segla)
Tungeneset (view to Okshornan)
Ånderdalen National Park
Husfjellet
Huselvdalen
Mefjordvær
Bergsbotn
There is no fixed itinerary for this photo tour, as we will move with the weather. There is no point in going to day-by-day scheduled locations when the weather isn’t going to be good there. Every day we will assess the weather and make the plans on where to go accordingly.
I will give you a unique insight in how I work, not only when taking photos, but also when planning around the weather, tidal conditions and of course chasing the northern lights. I have an extensive knowledge about the area, the weather and the northern lights.
Day 1. Arrival day (March 4)
The photo tour starts from Tromsø at 12:00. You will be picked up by me, either at the airport or in the city centre.
From Tromsø we will drive in roughly an hour to Brensholmen to catch the ferry to Senja. Here we will check-in into our accommodation for the week and then head out for sunset.
After sunset we will have dinner and if the weather allows, we will also head out for our first northern lights chase.
Day 2 -6 (March 5-9)
We will head out for sunrise and sunset every day. (if the night before has been very long because of the northern lights, we can skip a sunrise)
The quality of light at this time of the year is great throughout the day, therefore we will be outside for photography during the whole day.
We will also use the daytime to reach places that will be perfect for sunrise, for this we will use snowshoes to hike up a hill or even a mountain to get to unique locations and places that are rarely photographed.
The locations that we visit depend on the weather and tidal conditions. For sunrise and sunset we will be on location 1 hour before.
At this time of the year, sunrise is around 6:30 and sunset at 17:15.
On the first 3 days we will have a full moon in the evening and for the rest of the week the moon doesn’t rise. This allows us to experience nights with- and without moonlight - both conditions provide unique possibilities for night time photography in combination with the northern lights.
We will eat (self prepared) lunch on the go. For dinner we will go back to our accommodation to cook for ourselves or visit a restaurant. Where and when we eat depends a lot on how far we will have to travel for our photo locations of the day.
Day 7. Departure day (March 10)
This is the last day of the tour. We will head out for a last sunrise and sunset and plan to be back in Tromsø at around 20:00.

Your guide for this adventure will be Jurre Jan de Wit, a professional photographer, Wilderness guide and Northern lights guide.
Jurre Jan was born in The Netherlands, but has lived in Tromsø, northern Norway for the past 5 years, chasing the Northern Lights and photographing the natural beauty the Arctic has to offer. Over the years he has gained a lot of knowledge about these Arctic landscapes, the dynamic weather and all the challenges and opportunities that come with it.
In the past two years he has completed the Wilderness guide course and is now certified as a Wilderness Guide Level 1.
Throughout the years he has gained recognition and has been awarded for his photographic work.
After years of gaining experience and knowledge, he has now taken the step to offer this knowledge and experience to others. He does this in the form of adventurous photography tours. A type of tour that goes beyond the roadside locations and includes more adventure in order to take those unique photographs.

This is an active photography tour. During the tour we will hike through snow using snowshoes, walk up mountains and hills, but also walk around the rocky coastline and uneven ground.
For this tour to be enjoyable for you but also for the other participants a good fitness level is required. You need to be able to hike up to 2 hours and about 500m of elevation, carrying your photography gear and some water and snacks.
You don’t need to be athlete, but you do need to come prepared to be outside, exposed to the elements.
If you can answer yes to the following questions, you can be sure that your fitness level is good enough to join and enjoy this adventurous photo tour.
Are you able to run 5km in an hour?
Are you able to walk 10km with a 10kg backpack?

This tour will be conducted in a very small group. To maximise personal tuition and to make sure there is space for everyone to get the photos they want.
A small group also makes sure we are more flexible and are able to use a more capable 4×4 car instead of a van.Everyone has their own private room, because it is important to have some privacy and to get a good night rest.

This is a photo tour. This means that I (Jurre Jan) will guide you to the best locations during the best times of the day. But I will also help you to create the most beautiful photographs by sharing all my experience with tips and tricks. Over the years I have developed my own unique view on the landscapes and I love to help others find their own vision in photography.
I will not only guide photography, but as wilderness guide I will also provide countless tips and tricks on how to be comfortable outside in nature. I will show you how to navigate in the Arctic landscape, plan trips, work with the weather and also teach you how to use snowshoes.
Although you will learn a lot, this is not a dedicated workshop where we dive deep into various parts of photography, do daily image reviews and editing sessions. If there is time, we can do this. But the main goal of a tour is to be outside and photograph as much as possible. I will always be available to answer any questions and help you with your photography!
Accomodation
Our accommodation is perfectly located in the small fishing village of Fjordgård, right at the foot of Segla.
