NORTHERN LIGHTS CHASING AND PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP - Autumn

12th - 15th September 2025

Northern Norway - The magic of the northern lights in the arctic landscape

There are only a few people who do not have seeing the Northern Lights on their wish list, and righteously so! The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis are one of the most magical appearances our world has to offer.

High up in the far north of Norway - about 350km above the Arctic circle - lies Tromsø, one of the most well known places in the world to see and experience the Northern Lights. Tromsø is surrounded by beautiful fjords, tall mountains, countless valleys and beaches, and most importantly, lies right under the Auroral Oval. It is the perfect starting point for an adventure under the Northern Lights.

Have you always dreamed of seeing and photographing the Northern Lights in a breathtaking landscape? Would you like to go on an adventure around the fjords and mountains of Northern Norway, then this workshop is perfect for you.

During this 4 day, 3 nights workshop I will teach you everything there is to know about the Aurora Borealis, I will take you to the best places to photograph the Aurora and I will help you get the photos you’ve always dreamed of.

As a professional Northern Lights guide and photographer I have shown thousands of people the Northern Lights over the past 5 years. I know the whole Tromsø area like the back of my hand and I will make sure we’re in the right place with as much clear sky as possible.

active DAYS

To make the most out of this adventure, we will be out day and night. During the day we will discover and photograph the beautiful landscapes and during the night, we will of course be out for the Northern Lights.

As with everything in nature, nothing is certain! So we will have to be flexible and move with the weather.
For example: It could be stormy and raining at the coast, but further land-inwards it can be calm and have clear skies. This region has so many micro-climates, that almost always there are locations with good sky. This can mean that we will be spending hours in the car, driving to areas with clear sky - a trip to Finland isn’t out of the ordinary!

Because the conditions can differ a lot per area, knowing the area, the weather and photographic possibilities is key - as a well seasoned guide I will make sure to make the most out of every situation so that you can return home with the photos you’ve dreamed of.

LAND of CONTRASTs

In the summer months there is no darkness to be found in the North of Norway, because of the midnight-sun, there’s daylight 24/7 from May to the end of July. From this moment on, the amount of daylight decreases until the sun doesn’t even rise anymore for a period of two months during the Polar night which is from the end of November until end of January.

However, we will be there in September, the perfect balance between dark nights for seeing the Northern Lights and more than enough daylight for landscape photography during the day.

During our tour we will have some moonlight, which should create the perfect amount of light on the landscape to help us not only to capture the Northern Lights themselves, but also the amazing landscape that we’re in.

LOCATIons

The wider Tromsø region is packed with stunning locations. Maybe you’ve heard of ‘Otertinden’, one of the most well known mountains in Norway with its beautiful pointy twin-peaks, or the Lyngen alps, housing the tallest mountains of Northern Norway. Next to the endless amount of mountains, there are also pristine beaches with turquoise coloured water, for example in the Sommarøy area.

All of these locations, and way more are at our disposal. Not only the famous spots, but also loads of unknown locations that I’ve discovered myself, and would love to show you!

However, finally the weather depicts where we will end up, because for seeing and photographing the Northern Lights, we need as much clear sky as possible.

The northern lights

The main goal of this tour is of course seeing and photographing the Northern Lights. The Tromsø area is perfectly situated to witness this phenomenon - directly under the so called ‘Auroral Oval’. This basically means that all the magnetically charged particles from the sun that connect with the earths magnetic field, will end up burning up in our Atmosphere as Northern Lights right above our heads. How much Northern Lights we get on an evening is always a big surprise and depends on a lot of factors. But even on nights with lower activity, there’s good chances of seeing something.

During this tour, Jurre Jan will tell you everything about the Northern Lights; “How are they formed”, “what information is important and do you need to know” (hint: it’s not the KP-value), “which apps and data to use”, “In-depth information about the weather, microclimates and the orientation of the Aurora and how to incorporate them into photographing compositions” - and way more.

The most beautiful part about the Northern Lights is that they’re elusive and dynamic, no night is the same. It could be that on one night, it appears ‘only’ as a green arch on the horizon, and on the next night, the whole sky is covered in dancing Northern Lights that lasts for hours. Everything is possible, and there’s only one way to find out. Head out and find dark and clear sky!

And because of that, it’s important to head out for multiple nights, to maximise the chances and also to witness the Northern Lights in different forms, colours and locations. One thing will be guaranteed, it’s going to be an amazing adventure!

  • Adventure

If you are looking for adventure and are willing to work for your photos, then this is the tour you are looking for. I will take you off the beaten path, to wilder, secluded and more difficult to reach locations on this incredibly diverse and majestic island.

  • Small group

We will have a small group of 3 participants and me, Jurre Jan, as your photography and wilderness guide.

A small group will make sure we are more flexible and that we will not stand in each-others way when taking photos. It also allows us to use a more capable 4×4 vehicle.

  • Day and Night

We want to make the most of what Senja has to offer, and one of these things are the Northern Lights. Be prepared for long days, taking photos during the day and in the evening when the darkness is being illuminated by the magnificent Aurora.

What to expect

4 days / 3 nights full of adventure, visiting unknown and known locations in a small group of 3 participants and me as your guide.

We will make the most out of these days by adapting to the weather conditions. This means that we will drive to wherever the weather is best for the photos that we want to take. During the day this is of course more flexible, as we don’t need the clear sky that we need during the night. Often, during the day we already head in the direction of where we think the sky will be best in the evening, to minimise the driving and maximise our time outside. This also means that if necessary, we can already look for compositions during the day, which we can use in the night with the Northern Lights.
In the night we always go to locations that have as much clear sky as possible, so we have a good view of the Northern Lights.

Every day I will, together with all of you, evaluate the weather and our options for the day. By doing this together, you will get an insight in how I work. Therefore we don’t have a fixed itinerary.

We will not head out to shoot sunrises, because the plan is to be out every night to photograph the Northern Lights. We will go out during the day and for sunset.
We will bring packed lunch with us and will go to a restaurant in the evening.

There is no fixed itinerary for this photo tour, as we will move with the weather. Every day we will assess the weather and make the plans on where to go accordingly.

Our days will roughly look like this:

Day 1. Arrival day (September 12)
The photo tour starts from Tromsø at 12:00. You will be picked up by me, either at the airport or in the city centre.
From Tromsø we will drive to our accommodation, check-in and have an early dinner. After this we will head out for sunset and our first chase of Northern Lights.

Day 2 -3 (September 13-14)
We will take it easy in the morning, because there’s a big chance that we’ve had a long night of chasing and photographing the Northern Lights.
We will start with some breakfast and then make a plan for the day (we will very likely head into the direction that seems best for the evening)
We pack some lunch and then head out for some photography during the daytime. We have lots of locations at our disposal, from the west coast, to Lyngen alps or even Finland. We will eat lunch on the go and at the end of the afternoon we’ll go to some restaurant or cafe for dinner, so that we are ready for sunset and another night of Northern Lights.

Sunset at this time of the year is at 19:30 and during the nights we’ll have about 55-65% of moon.

The moon conditions provide unique possibilities for night time photography in combination with the northern lights.

We will eat (self prepared) lunch on the go. For dinner we will go back to our accommodation to cook for ourselves or visit a restaurant. Where and when we eat depends a lot on how far we will have to travel for our photo locations of the day.

Day 4. Departure day (September 15)
This is the departure day. We will say goodbye to each other after some very long days of photography and chasing the Northern Lights.

Your guide for this adventure will be Jurre Jan de Wit, a professional photographer, Wilderness guide and Northern lights guide.
Jurre Jan was born in The Netherlands, but has lived in Tromsø, northern Norway for the past 5 years, chasing the Northern Lights and photographing the natural beauty the Arctic has to offer. Over the years he has gained a lot of knowledge about these Arctic landscapes, the dynamic weather and all the challenges and opportunities that come with it.

In the past two years he has completed the Wilderness guide course and is now certified as a Wilderness Guide Level 1.
Throughout the years he has gained recognition and has been awarded for his photographic work.

After years of gaining experience and knowledge, he has now taken the step to offer this knowledge and experience to others. He does this in the form of adventurous photography tours. A type of tour that goes beyond the roadside locations and includes more adventure in order to take those unique photographs.

YOUR GUIDE

Good to know

  • The tour starts in Tromsø. You will arrive in Tromsø (TOS) by plane.

From Tromsø all transportation is included in the tour.

There will also be a Whatsapp group chat, where you can ask questions about the tour and your preparation.

  • This is an active photography tour. During the tour we will make medium long hikes (3km one way) and walk up (small) mountains and hills, but also walk around the rocky coastline and uneven ground.

For this tour to be enjoyable for you but also for the other participants an OK fitness level is required. You need to be able to hike up to 1-2 hours and about 300m of elevation, carrying your photography gear and some water and snacks.

You don’t need to be athlete or very fit, the right mindset goes a long way!

If you can answer yes to the following questions, you can be sure that your fitness level is good enough to join and enjoy this adventurous photo tour.

    1. Are you able to run 5km in an hour?

    2. Are you able to walk 5km with a 10kg backpack?

  • This tour will be conducted in a very small group. To maximise personal tuition and to make sure there is space for everyone to get the photos they want.
A small group also makes sure we are more flexible.

  • This is a photo tour. This means that I (Jurre Jan) will guide you to the best locations during the best times of the day. But I will also help you to create the most beautiful photographs by sharing all my experience with tips and tricks. Over the years I have developed my own unique view on the landscapes and I love to help others find their own vision in photography.

I will not only guide photography, but as wilderness guide I will also provide countless tips and tricks on how to be comfortable outside in nature. I will show you how to navigate in the Arctic landscape, plan trips and work with the weather.

Although you will learn a lot, this is not a dedicated workshop where we dive deep into various parts of photography, do daily image reviews and editing sessions. If there is time, we can do this. But the main goal of a tour is to be outside and photograph as much as possible. I will always be available to answer any questions and help you with your photography!

Accomodation

Our accommodation will be a private apartment/house for just our group, located at about 1 hour drive from Tromsø, close to the Lyngen alps. This location is carefully chosen to be ideally situated between all of the locations we will visit while minimising the driving times.
